Preface

For more than sixty years ago, one of the greatest acts of discrimination happened in South Africa. Thanks to the Dutch and British, Apartheid gave a special treatment to white Africans though none to black Africans.1 Apartheid is a political system in South Africa from 1948 to the early 1990s that separated the different peoples living there and gave privileges to those of European origin.2 White Africans would take over everything a black African owns from a piece of bread to a house. Since the white people would take over the black's house, black Africans were forced to live in work camps or homelands.3 Many of them were to do forced labor.4 Many black Africans were tired of this unfair management, so they and a few white supporters decided to protest against the apartheid.5 The protest did not go well, for many who protested for equality were punished or killed by Dutch descendants, better known as Afrikaners.6 Protesters such as Nelson Mandela were locked up in prison, but as time went by, the Afrikaners soon knew who had the last laugh.7

This story describes a young African girl witnessing Apartheid at its worst. The story focuses on 19 year-old Yoana Malouf, a South African girl who was born half black from her mother and half white from her father's. Ever since the day she was born, she was raised to work as a slave in the house of her father's supervisor, Colonel Almeida, who is an Afrikaner. With no parents, Yoana is raised by Col. Almeida's wife who educates her very well. Now all grown up, Col. Almeida makes forces Yoana work outside of his house with all the other black slaves and live in a homeland. While working as a slave, Yoana struggles with the decision to work for her freedom or rebel against apartheid for equality. Will Yoana ever see the light of day?

A fight for freedom

Ever since I was little, I've always dreamed of being free. I've always wanted to feel free like a bird. It's a shame I never witness it since I'm cooped up in a big mansion. My name is Yoana Malouf. I was born under a white African farmer and a black African woman on February 12, 1972 in Nelspruit, South Africa. Nelspruit is a fairly old city filled with grasslands and forests. The weather gets rather cold during the winter and extremely humid in the summer but I don't mind. Not that many people live nearby because many white Africans own large amounts of land. When I was old enough to speak; my father's boss, Colonel Almeida, killed my mother for giving birth to me and for marrying my father. Since South Africa is under Apartheid rule, White and Black Africans were not meant to be together in a group nor were they supposed to get married. 8 If Black and White Africans were to attempt going against that rule, they were to be punished or killed. Besides having my mother being killed, my father and I were also ready to be put to death when I was first born. Luckily, Col. Almeida's wife, Gertrude, saved my father and me from being killed.

"I'm only doing my job by following the laws of Apartheid" Almeida addressed.

"Oh, yes," she said sarcastically, "I suppose you love killing innocent people."

Col. Almeida ignored her and drank his tea.

"Well, I hope you start thinking of finding a new coffee farmer after you kill Joseph" Gertrude added.

Col. Almeida spat out his tea and got up.

"Alright they can live as long as you stop talking to me for the rest of the night, the girl can even be raised here in this darn house" he bellowed as he exited the room.

Gertrude told me that my father and I were able to live. My father was able to keep his job for a couple years, but Col. Almeida later fired and banished him from seeing me because I was born half-black. Gertrude, who was sweet as sugar, raised me as if I was her own child. After eighteen years of being a prim, proper, and educated young lady, Col. Almeida gave me a wonderful surprise on my nineteenth birthday.

"Guess what, sweetie?" he articulated as he grabbed my arm.

            I stayed silent.

"Don't know," he articulated."Well I'll tell you now. Since you're part black, you're still considered trash. And do you know where all the trash goes to?"

            "In the dumpster," I guessed.

"Oh, aren't you so smart?" he said. "You may look white skinned like me, but underneath, you're just a good for nothing piece of black African trash. Starting tomorrow, you get to work outside in the farm with all the other pieces of trash during the day, and during the night, you get to sleep alongside them in a dumpster!" He let go of my arm and pointed to my room. "Pack up your stuff" he barked. "You're going to your new home."

As I ran upstairs to pack my stuff, I prayed to God that I would have a safe journey at the homelands. I heard Gertrude and Col. Almeida arguing over me about my stay at the homelands. I had all my clothes packed in my bag. When I went downstairs, Col. Almeida and his wife were staring at me. Every step I took made my throat tighten. Every step felt like a weight on my shoulders. I said good bye to Gertrude who was sobbing dearly. I smiled at her to let her know that I'll be alright, then gave her a big hug and strolled off to the car with Col. Almeida alongside me. Almeida and I didn't talk for a while. Looking at the warm amber sky, pink clouds, and colorful fields of South Africa made me feel sad. When we reached the homelands, Col. Almeida spoke about when and where I should work. He said that I'm working in the fields to pick crops.

"There are no breaks on this job. Did you hear me?" he said as he opened the door for me. "Refusing to work will bring you punishment. Do you understand?"

"Yes, sir," I assured as I exited the door.

"Good." he responded. "I'll see you tomorrow."

He jumped back into his car and drove away into the warm South African night. I was left alone with nothing but the bag on my arm. There were so many broken down homes. Some people were living in the houses; others were living outside of them. People were staring at me, and it made me nervous. I felt like escaping the homelands but there were Afrikaners guarding the barb-wired walls outside. A little girl was watching me from a distance. She and her father were watching me from a distance. The man looked thin and old. He looked tall and muscular for his age. The girl looked very frail and malnourished. She had short curly hair and wore rugged clothes. She fit the age of a thirteen year old. She came up to me and introduced herself.

"Hello, friend" she said. "My name is Kisa. What's your name?"

            "Yoana" I replied.

"My father and I were watching you. Are you new to these homelands?" she asked.

             I nodded.

"Well... my papa and I were wondering if you would like to come to our house and have dinner?" she asserted.

"That's very nice of you but I don't want to be a burden," I answered.

"No, you're not going to be a bur- whachamacallit" she stuttered. "Please come to our house. We have plenty of room for you to sleep in, plus, we have enough food fit for five people. Please come?"

"Oh, okay then, I'll go with you." I attested.

So we strolled off to Kisa's house where I met her father, Anuke. He seemed to be very kind and polite. Both of them were very nice welcoming me to their home. A spicy smell was coming from their broken little shack. Anuke just made boerewors sausages. Mmmm!! How they smelled wonderful. The plain and salty juices of the sausages tasted better than how they smelled. After dinner, we all sang a few songs and they taught me a few new games. They made some space for me to sleep. I was very thankful towards their hospitality. Though I found it odd that they didn't ask where I came from. Maybe it was because they knew it was my first night being here. Who knows?

The next day wasn't so good. Col. Almeida and his minions were watching us work. He was watching all of us from his mansion balcony. I was pealing all the coffee seeds apart into a bag. He demanded that I and a couple other women go get five large sacks of coffee beans done by today.

"If you don't get the five sacks done before noon today, you will be punished. Do you understand?" ordered Col. Almeida.

Everyone nodded and went on to their work

            "Faster! Faster!" yelled Col. Almeida.

It was 11:00 a.m. and the malicious sun had never been hotter. It's been hours since I've started breaking coffee beans apart and I've only gotten 4 and a half sacks done. There is no way I'm going to finish by noon. I look over at Kisa and the 2 women beside me and they're almost done with their last sack. I was amazed at their speed pealing.

"How are you able to get all those sacks done before noon?" I asked Kisa who was on her last bag.

"When your life is at risk, that's all you think about" she mouthed. That's what enables me to finish so fast."

"So your life is always on the line, isn't it?" I asked.

            "All the time" sighed Kisa.

"You there! Stand up now!" called an Afrikaner.

            I stood up.

            "Yes sir?" I responded.

"Show me your sacks now" he demanded.

I didn't finish my 5th sack, so I just showed the four sacks I've finished.

"These are four sacks" shouted the guard. "Where is the fifth?"

"Uhhh..." I hesitated. "Where is that last one?"

"Don't you dare try to trick me because you are not fooling anybody!" yelled the guard.

            Just then Kisa stood up.

"Here it is" she disclosed as she placed the sack in front of the guard.

The guard knelt down and checked the bag. He then grabbed Kisa's arm and shoved her to the ground.

"The next time you cover for her, both of you will be locked on the post all day with no food or water. You hear?" He claimed.

            We nodded.

"Good, now go back to work." he ordered as he marched away.

I ran over to Kisa and helped her stand up. I noticed there was a large wound on her forearms.

"Thank you for covering for me" I said. "I really appreciate it."

"You're welcome" she mentioned. "Now let's get back to work."

            "Let's," I replied.

Day by day, Col. Almeida assigned us a different job, and in doing so the Afrikaner guards never seized to fail torturing one or several of the workers. Some people were beaten whereas others were killed on the spot. Even at the homelands some people try to rebel against Apartheid. Every day caused one of us to have not only a wound, but a scar.

One night at the homelands, Anuke, Kisa, a woman named Karim, and myself were talking about what privileges are allowed in the system of apartheid.

"In the system of apartheid, black Africans aren't allowed to be educated at school or by anyone" said Kisa. 9

"What? That's not fair" I inferred.

"It is fair to the men of Apartheid" Anuke added as he took a sip of water.

"You're going to love this one," Karim jested. Black Africans are not allowed to vote because the white Africans don't consider us as citizens." 10

Everyone stayed silent. Suddenly Anuke spoke.

"We're going to have to stand up against this" Anuke divulged.

"We can't do that" Kisa said. "We'll be put in prison."

Anuke ignored her and climbed up his roof and called everyone.

"Citizens of South Africa!" He exclaimed. "We must come together and stand for what is ours! Starting tomorrow, we must break free from Apartheid and promote equality all over South Africa."

The crowd was enlightened and agreed to what Anuke said.

"What if the Afrikaners don't listen to us?" I questioned.

"Then we will keep fighting for equality" Anuke proclaimed.

"But we'll be put in prison just like Nelson Mandela" I replied.

"At least Nelson Mandela stood up for what he believed in. Don't you understand that what they're doing to us is cruel and unjust? Those goons are giving us hell and were the ones that have to put up with it" he professed.

He took a pause and spoke again.

"When you were living with Col. Almeida, didn't you ever feel the anger and hatred towards him?" he questioned.

Just then, those terrible memories came to my mind horrible memories of Col. Almeida mistreating me for no reason. Finding out about what he did to my parents. I then remembered when he ripped my dress that Gertrude gave me on my ninth birthday. I cried myself to sleep that night. 'Why would he do that to me?' I wondered. 'I've never done anything bad to him, and yet he still treats me like an evil virus...'

            "Yoana," Anuke said.

I shook my head and nodded to his question.

"Are you willing to join me in this fight?" he requested.

"Yes, let's do it," I agreed.

The next day, everyone walked to work. Everyone took their tools but didn't work. We all just stood silently at our stations. The Afrikaners looked puzzled. Col. Almeida stood up and spoke.

"Why aren't you pieces of trash not working?" he blustered. "Do you think that you can just roam around freely doing whatever you want? Well you can't! Go back to work now!"

            Anuke walked up to him.

"We're not working unless you give us the same respect to all of your white workers" he expounded. "We're only asking nicely. Will you please give us respect and equality?"

            "NO!" Col. Almeida shouted.

            "Very well then," he said.

He turned around and took a step towards his station but quickly turned around punching Col. Almeida right in the face and making him fall unconscious. "POW!" His fist hitting Almeida's face sounded like a hammer hitting a chain. All of us felt proud of what Anuke did but the fight wasn't over. The Afrikaner's ran up to Anuke armed with weapons.

We marched towards the guards shouting out, "Respect!" As the seven guards were ready to shoot us, they realized that they have no match for fighting off 300 people marching towards them with farm tools in their hands. The guards dropped their weapons and ran inside the house.

            "Hooray!" The crowd hollered.

Suddenly, Col. Almeida stood up with a gun in his hand.

"Don't start celebrating so early yet," he interjected. "Every one of you will be put in prison for disobeying my orders."

"Not so fast, Almeida!" Gertrude asserted.

"Gertrude, go back inside!" Col. Almeida shouted.

"No!" she replied. "You know that you have no control of these people. Its 1991; we're not re-living the 1960's."

"I do so, you old bat" he argued.

"No, you don't, "she replied "Haven't you read the newspaper?"

            "What newspaper?" he inquired.

She handed him a newspaper. Col. Almeida snatched it out of her hand and read it.

"I'm out of the constitution" he questioned.

            "Keep reading," she chuckled.

"President de Klerk abolishes the laws of apartheid?!" he cried.

"Keep on reading Almeida," she guffawed.

He kept on reading. "Those pieces of trash don't work for me by force nor live in the homelands anymore!" he mumbled in a shocked voice.

Col. Almeida was so shocked about the news that he fainted to the ground. Anuke, Kisa and I ran up to Gertrude.

"Is that stuff Col. Almeida shouted really true?" I asked her.

"True as true can be, take a look," she notified.

I quickly scanned the paper. When I was done reading it, I looked up at Kisa and Anuke and smiled at them.

            "We did it," I verified.

            "We all did," Kisa concluded.

"Hey! So what happened?" called Karim.

Anuke smiled and gave two thumbs up at the crowd. The crowd jumped up and cheered. Everyone cheered in happiness. Everyone was hugging and kissing each other. We were jumping and dancing in glee and relief. I felt proud of Anuke for helping me believe in myself. I actually felt the weight coming off my shoulders. Now I know how it feels, to be free like a bird.

Have you met before?
Ville: I know Lacuna Coil as band since their first EP, which at that timea friend slipped to me, who worked in a record shop. At that time the sound was even a bit more pop-like, because of that I like this mini-album very much. Nowadays I would prefer to listen to My Dying Bride, in the meantime your are for my taste a bit to heavy and dark. But I´m really looking forward to your new album. Personally we met each other at festivals.
Cristina: I think you make wonderful music and have your own unmistakeable style and you never care about what people say. I saw and heard HIM for the first time at a small club concert in Milan. I guess my favourite song is still "Join Me", just because I don´t know the other ones so well.

Do you see any parallels and common ground between HIM and Lacuna Coil and you two personally?
Ville: Well, a good taste for music.
Cristina is giggling.
Ville: She is Italian and I´m a Finn, so we are both very passionate when it´s about music and we put much heart and feeling in what we do.
Cristina: I agree, but I was very surprised that you are from Finland. Usually I noticed Scandinavian artists and their music in a different way. At first they are cold and unmoved mostly, but when they get to know you better, they almost turn into Italians!
Ville: As a Finn I´m half Hungarian.
Cristina: For an Italian you are too tall and to white and these blue eyes...
Ville: Green. And i don´t cook. Will you cook for me the next time? Cristina: Ok. Men don´t cook in reality anyway.
Ville: I´m cooking often my favourite meal Thai for me and my girlfriend. That´s a good choice to keep yourself fit on tour.
Cristina: Oh, and there´s always something to learn. I like everything, when we are talking about food, you could also say I really like to eat. To eat is like a religion for us, we could never do without. Well, I´m hungry, will we get something right now?

There is something else you have obviously in common. In both bands the focus is a lot on you personally.
Ville: Yes, but that is so because of the media.
Cristina: They always pounce on the vocalist.
Ville: For HIM there is another reason though. Different as in Lacuna Coil I´m writing all songs, too, and for that reason I can tell more about it. My bandmates are more the calm ones and don´t like interviews and video shootings, in a way I digged my own grave.
Cristina: I guess, for myself the reason is that I´m a woman. As long as it isn´t doubt that I can sing, it doesn´t matter.
Ville: But it´s fantastic to be a good looking woman!
Cristina: It is no problem for me and as well not for the guys, they don´t get mad with it. I´m just something as a sign.

Do you feel more responsible for the success of the band like the head of a family?
Cristina: Yes, it could be described this way.
Ville: More as the drunken uncle.
Cristina: Or the black sheep.

You are both very charismatic and good looking...
Ville (interrupting): Back in time.
Cristina: I´m getting older, too...
Ville: Well, I think older men are looking better, cooler and sexier than young guys. That´s the same with women, who get older in dignity. I like this flabby skin.
Cristina: That´s right. Tomorrow I´ll be 33 years old and I´m proud of it.
Ville: That is the only possibility. (grins)
Cristina: Most are dying already at the age of 20. Their life follows a plan: Job, marriage, children and at the age of 40 they are fat and watching TV and complain about the past. That is really terrible and because of that I don´t feel old or like 33.
Ville: I like the imagination to be old, to discuss political and religious thing with grey hair. That´s the reason why I try to experience as much as possible now to gather wisdom. Maybe I will do something else and become a mathemetician or so, I love mathematics.
Cristina: I hate maths. But I could become a cook and plant on a farm my own vegetables and have animals, that wouldn´t be bad. Although to get old is something different for a woman than a man.
Ville: I think older women are more attractive than younger ones. It´s not only the appearance but also that what comes across, that life was lived with many experiences and also faults.
Cristina: I think faults of the appearance are very interesting. Because of that these American women are so awful: Artificial identical formed Barbies without personality. I prefer it if somebody is not so perfect beautiful. I think it is here inside ( taps on her chest). It´s something about personality and maybe also a personal style. It´s only natural that it helps to get attention. But people are not stupid. If you are only looking good, they might buy some posters of you, but for that reason they wouldn´t buy a record of you.
Ville: There is sexual beauty, artistic beauty, spiritual beauty, but who cares. We are all still seeking our soul mate, somebody we could spend our life, somebody who is sexual attractive in a way, that you always feel like a little boy or girl and with whom you can communicate a lot on an intellectual level. I believe then is beauty taken out in the physical way from this person.

Do you like to expose yourself?
Cristina (now it´s not longer possible to hold her back, maybe because the backstage-catering is finishing in an hour): That´s funny, it´s like a game to experiment with your image. In the beginning I was very, very shy and it didn´t match at all, that I had to be to the fore as a vocalist. It is fantastic that I now own the self-confidence to stand there and to feel comfortable.
Ville: We were very shy, too. These times I had long hair to hide myself behind.

Would you be able to live a normal life again and in which ways have your life styles changed with success?
Ville: As "Join Me" was in the charts and the teenie mags reported about us, it was a little bit difficult, screaming teenies were following us everywhere. It is not always nice if 12-year-old put chocolate in your mail box while you are sitting in your room and masturbate, but I think, that is a small price we pay for indulging in our passion of music and to earn our lives with it. We travel around the world, meet nice people with similar interests, ust to be allowed to play at this festival is great. I come from a working class family, my father was a taxi driver and then he sold dildos. It is really nice for me, that I could pay cigarettes and rent by myself at the age of 20. Many years I had to ration it and had to think twice about every penny to spend. Now we are often in the daily press of Helsinki and we are invited to the celebration of the Independence Day at the Presidents house. I really have to say that I definite accept a little bit stalking more (his gaze roams lost in thougt to BAM who is white as a sheet) than to get nothing out of it. In addition our fans have been growing up with us and are nowadays very respectful. If somebody wants to have a photo or an autograph it´s really no problem. They don´t try anymore to become friends with you, what is very pleasant.
Cristina (pressing her hand in the pit of her stomach): It´s the same with us. On the other hand Metal will never be appreciated like Mainstream-music in Italy. Lacuna coil is only known by the scene, but when we play at the appropriate clubs people don´t behave as we were rockstars. We don´t want to belong to the Jet-Set. All those who do nothing else than to be photographed on parties and appear at TV-shows, that is so thick. I´m glad that I don´t belong to it because fortunately I have a brain. Only one time there was someone who wrote me very vulgar letters, but between the lines you could read that he was a very frail person, so I was not afraid of it. Without make-up I look 10 years younger anyway, nobody recognizes me then.

What is the funniest rumour you have ever heard about yourself?
Ville: Oh my god... I have always told, that you make your thing good when there are many bootlegs of yourself circulating, you have a lot of fansites and there are a lot of rumours about you.
Cristina: Wow, I´m good at this! Well, I have a new boyfriend every day, I´m a pregnant lesbian, had been married and was divorced several times.
Ville: I really don´t want to know how many girls I should have made pregnant. Anyway I weared for some time a beanie, cause I had a chemotherapy there...

Are there phases you are tired of your being an artist, for example after making a new album?
Cristina: No not really. At first I have a lot of friends, who build me up each time and than it is wonderful that I´m allowed to call something creative as work. I would freak out if I had to sit behind a desk in an office.
Ville: Hm. When you have worked on an album and you putted in all feelings, all intellect, all your reserves, physical and psychological, you feel after it for a short time a complete vacuum. Some kind of depession as woman have in childbed. But happyness is overrated anyway.

Are you superstitious?
Cristina: Not at all.
Ville: The complete opposite, I love it. Recently the BBC reported about the finding of the oldest Bible, according to it "The Number Of The Beast" should not bev666 but 616. Since that I like it to be in hotelrooms which have the number 616.

Disastrous noises come across from the lavatory. BAM staggers along again.
Ville (fatherly): Never smoke pot with Billy Idol!
Cristina: Do you think we get something to eat yet?

Spontaneous: What was the most impressive moment of your career so far?
Ville: When we got our first contract at a label, that was magical. I remember that phone call and that I had a date for a rehearsal directly after it. It was a wonderful day in spring and I tried to act unobtrusive to drop the bombshell later. But the guys noticed at once, that there was something wrong, because I was grinning like a Cheshire cat.
Cristina: I was bowled over as the both biggest Rock-radio-stations in America begin to broadcast a song of us again and again and from that point it was spread over all the other radiostations, that was cool!

What could make you today as happy as at that time?
Ville: To come home, to relax and to sleep with my love.
Cristina: Tomorrow is my birthday, it will be nice to come home then. And I really would like to eat now something!

- This was a story I read on Valo-Daily. Some how this article reminded me of my mom saying "beware of cyber bullies" which I find absolutley hilarious whenever that comes up in my head. Personally I don't know what to believe out of this so you be the judge on this article...

(c.) Valo-Daily

Over the past few weeks fake "Ville" and "Ville's BF" sites have been deleted from myspace as well as on other social platforms. Ville gave a live phone-in interview to our very own CelticAngel on Euro-Rock Radio on Heartagram Day, in which he sat the record straight on a few things fans wanted to know about.

Ville stated that he did have a myspace page (and only a myspace page). It was NOT under his name nor any of his personal information. He also said he was hardly on it, if at all anymore. Ville made it a point to let everyone know that he DOES NOT contact ANYONE via email, internet accounts or any messaging services. Those that are indeed close to Ville would NEVER brag or gloat about their friendship...they don't have to, they have nothing to prove.

They also would protect him and his private life no matter what !!

A few new sites have come up since that interview, while others have given up the charade. There are still some that are being watched closely. Some of these sites are just fans, but some are involved in illegal activities or inappropriate interactions with minors. I know it seems thrilling to think you are "talking" to the real Ville Valo or one of his close friends...however, THAT IS JUST NOT TRUE!!! Don't ever give out your address, phone number, credit card or social security numbers.
If you have any questions about the band, feel free to visit their Official HIM Fan Club/Online Store/News/Media/Boards at: http://www.Heartagram.com

Yesterday, A very upset young fan found an altered copy of their autographed photo of Ville (which they had posted on their page), being used as "proof" of the "HIM_VILLE_VALO_UK_STREET_TEAM" site's owner being great friends with Ville. These are stock photos and are generated in mass for fans in general and are easy to acquire.

The HIM_VILLE_VALO_UK-STREET_TEAM owner (Paula) also said she was deleting the site due to all the trouble she was having, and would be using "HIM_FANS_UNITE" as her new site ("to keep out the riff raff"). Please do not get sucked into this woman's delusions. She has been at this for a long time and it is very well documented. She is also putting up a personal site: " ~ Anthie ~ Paulalle~" with the name "Paulalle~~" underneath the icon.

As a side note to this....~Freedom Photography~ has bonded with Paula over this and are now claiming to know each other. Again, questions about who has photographed the band...go to Heartragram.com (several that HAVE shot the band are members). Freedom Photography might have taken a few photos as most fans do....but IS NOT a photographer or assistant for HIM, Ville or any of the members of HIM !!

Please use caution on any website. Sure the internet can be fun, but it can also be used to harm someone. Stopping these sites is like swatting at flies, so please use caution. If you get the feeling something is not right, contact your local authorties. In the meantime, management is being kept informed of any erroneous sites, comments and/or profiles.

Thanks to the Dutch and British, apartheid gave a special treatment to white Africans then to those of black Africans. Apartheid is a political system in South Africa from 1948 to the early 1990s that separated the different peoples living there and gave privileges to those of European origin. White Africans would take over everything a black African owns from a piece of bread to a house. Since the white people would take over the black’s house, black Africans were forced to live in work camps or homelands. Some of them were offered forced labor or even working as slaves. Many black Africans were tired of this unfair management, so they and a couple of white supporters decided to protest against apartheid. The protest did not go so well, for many who protested for equality were punished or killed by the Afrikaners. Many protesters such as Nelson Mandela were locked up in prison, but as time goes by, the Afrikaners will soon know who had the last laugh.

The story focuses on 19 year-old Yoana Maalouf, a South African girl who was born half black from her mother and half white from her father’s. Ever since the day she was born, she was raised to work as a slave in the house of her father’s supervisor, Colonel Almeida, who is an Afrikaner. Yoana’s father begs and begs to his boss to have the custody for his daughter back. But the choice Col. Almeida makes is to have Yoana work outside of his house with all the other black slaves and live in a homeland. While working as a slave, Yoana struggles with the decision to work for her freedom or rebel against apartheid for equality. Will Yoana see the light of day? The decision may shock you.

Ok this took me forever to recap what I did today so ... cut me some slack, I've went through too much today! Enjoy!!! :D

Today…

pretty much sucked asshole for me. I would have to say that today was the worst day ever for me for a couple of reasons. First, I usually wake up at around 5:30 a.m. & I did get up on time but somehow my sister took over the bathroom because she's now going to an art institute school. I asked her to get out of the shower since she took 20+ min. shower. @ 6 a.m she finished but she still won't get out of the bathroom & she's getting herself ready on my side of the counter sink. I asked her to move towards her sink but she didn't move. We ended up arguing over bathroom sides who gets what & so & so; in the end she won the fight by calling me a bitch & I waited in my room til she got out. I was 20 min. off schedule so I right away washed my face, teeth, put on some make-up & left school w/out eating breakfast. Luckily, I got to school on time. Now the fun stuff begins....

Lets start w/ the good news: I got a "B" on my chemestry test which was a first for me cuz I haven't got a good science grade like that since 7th grade.

Alright bad stuff: Ok, I had to do a World history study guide about the French revolution over the weekend & there were 3 essay questions & my teacher (who is new & only 22) (also the worst teacher ever) told us to do an outline on it so we could be able to do the essay on the test. Did I mention that the test was on the French Revolution! Over the weekend, I was quite confused, I even asked my teacher what the questions meant & she gave me a whole different answer talking about the structure of an essay. (stupid lady) Finally I able to understand it w/ the help of my oldest sister & I finished yesterday.

Well here's the comes the greatest surprise ever!!! Over the weekend I've studied really hard for the test. Did I mention that its on the French revolution! Well here it comes: My teacher gave me the test it wasn't about the French revolution!!!! The test was about Enlightment thinkers/ philosophers!!!! I had a tough time doing the test! You're probably thinking "well at least you'll have points on the essay, huh?" No!!! Here comes another surprise I had my outline ready on my table (btw, my outline from the St. guide had to deal with economic troubles, important events, & opinion paragraph about saying which were the best principles of the revolution) & she writes down the topic for the essay which didn't match mine. She wrote on the whiteboard saying she wants an essay explaining 3 things that contributed to the Revolution: social contract, citizenship participation, & equality. (btw she snatched my outline & threw it in the trash) It was much harder doing the essay & couldn't concentrate because I was so pissed off at the teacher! When class ended, I was the last person done w/ the test & I felt embarassed, overwhelmed, really angry about the test & the teacher. I was so angry that I wanted to cry & leave school so bad cuz I know I failed that test.

It was break, & I just wanted something to distract me from that stupid class. So I hung out with my friends, & we were talking about stupid stuff like the past & what we did over the weekend. Then somone randomly brings up religion & the bible & my friends are talking crap about it like "F**k the bible" or "God is useless & stupid"!!! And I was so offended & hurt by it! I didn't say anything but give dirty looks at them especially the guy who said "F the bible"!

The rest of the day came alittle ok, til' I went to math class & forgot my textbook!!!! Luckily we only did some review w/out bookwork so I was lucky on that. When I came home, the first thing I did was call my mom about the whole history test thing & she was just as pissed off as me about the teacher. My mom's planning on switching me out of that class & make me have a different teacher. Secondly, I tried lookig for my mathbook & I CAN'T FIND IT!!!!!! ARGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like I'm gonna buy a new mathbook! This sucks!!! :(

We are doing our own songs in the studio at the moment! Tomorrow we are going to mix it. They get crazy in their heads and so we have to change the line up all the time. The band is he and me (claps on Kris' shoulder) so we kick everyone out who doesn't care about us! WE kick them out, that's it! And we don't have problems to find new ones, there are so many Rock'n'Roll people here in Tampere that really likes to come to our band. Whole Tampere is full of musicians that would like to play with Black Jezus, so we don't have a problem! The other players have kind of problems with their heads when they got kicked out! We don't want to work like from 9 to 5 every day.

Kris: Two weeks ago I tried to ride a horse... (No, don't ask me what that has to do with my question O.o)

Macceus: His whole ass is black now because he was riding this horse *laughs*

FAS: A real one???
interview with Vivian Sin'amor

The following interview with Vivian Sin'amor of Lovex was conducted by rain and tina for Eurobands.us.

Vivian, thank you for spending some of your free time answering our questions, we and our readers appreciate it.

EB: Tell us about the first song you heard that cut right through you and made you want to be a guitarist.

Vivian: The song was probably Metallica’s Master of Puppets, released in 1986. That was the first heavy metal song I was interested in and that’s where it all started. I became a huge fan of Metallica. I wanted to become the next James Hetfield and at some point I even bought a guitar similar to his.

EB: Since becoming somewhat famous yourself, have you had the opportunity to meet any of your guitar heroes?

Vivian: Not really. All my guitar heroes live there in America and at the moment, we haven’t made it that far. Nevertheless, it would be great to be able to play there someday and to meet, e.g., Slash or Steve Vai.

EB: Is there someone you would love to work with but are too intimidated… like still too much of a fan to deal with it?

Vivian: No, not really. I would like to co-operate with my own idols, there are no problems with that.

EB: Is there any particular time period in rock and roll where you would have loved to be a part of the scene (Seattle 90's, 80's on the strip, etc)?

Vivian: “80’s on the strip” sounds like most fun.

EB: Living in a relatively small city like Tampere, how do you balance being in a popular band and keeping your private life out of the press?

Vivian: I think that the artist names are a help. That’s one of the reasons why I don’t want to reveal my real name; people would too easily find out where I live, etc. But the fact is that at some point it will be impossible to hide my real name. Then it doesn’t matter anymore whether I say it in public or not, because everybody already knows it.

EB: What is your favorite thing about living where you do? Or is it just a convenience for pursuing your music?

Vivian: Warm-minded people. In my opinion, Tampere has a very laid-back atmosphere compared to Helsinki, for example. It’s very nice to live here even though it’s sometimes intimidating in a sense that this really is a small place where all the people know each other a bit too well. Still, my job lets me travel around so much that it helps me to deal with the smallness of Tampere.

EB: Do you still have many of the same friends you had pre- Lovex? Has it ever been awkward for you or them dealing with your fame?

Vivian: I have had pretty much the same friends through my adolescence. Of course, I no longer have enough time to be in contact with some of them but I’ve never had any problems with any of my friends because of the publicity or success. One of the reasons may be that some of my friends are in publicity as well and quite successful, too.

EB: When did you meet the other guys in Lovex and was it love at first sight? Did you feel a kindred spirit or was that something that evolved over time?

Vivian: I’ve known Sammy and Jason since the beginning of elementary school and we’ve always been friends. I’ve grown to know Theon, Julian and Christian only when they joined the band but since the very beginning we’ve enjoyed spending time with each other.

EB: Do you recall the day you made the absolute decision to be in Lovex?

Vivian: I can’t recall such a day. I’ve been in this band since the very beginning and day by day it’s become more and more important to me.

EB: From the inception of the band to charting with "Bleeding" is a short period of time. The band was almost immediately picked up. Is there anything you feel you may have missed experience wise by being so popular so fast?

Vivian: In fact the band was founded already in December 2001 and Bleeding was only released on 10.8.2005 - so I think that we’ve had enough time. Of course the final line-up of our band has existed only since the beginning of 2004 and from that point of view the success came quite quickly. Still, we’ve written our own music since 2001 and the first version of Bleeding was written in 2002. I really don’t think that I would have missed something just because we became popular so fast. You know, I had been playing in miscellaneous bands for almost 10 years before one of the bands had a breakthrough.

EB: With the release of Divine Insanity, the band proved you have the right to be where you are. How do you deal with the critics who insist you're a trend band?

Vivian: I just don’t give a fuck.. We’ve never been interested in the critics’ opinions of us. Each critic only represents a single opinion and very often those people disagree with me, whether it is about movies or music. The most important thing is that I know myself that we’ve really worked hard for this success. I haven’t started playing this kind of music or decided to dress like this because this is some kind of a trend. This wasn’t a trend when I started playing in a band. And I don’t understand why I should be so sorry about this kind of music becoming a trend with our contribution.

EB: With the help of the internet you have become quite popular in other countries; unfortunately this means many fans don't have easy access to your shows. A lot of fans' first glimpse of you live is on sites like You Tube. Do you have a problem with fan videos and bootlegs of your shows?

Vivian: No, I think that the live clips can be distributed freely in the internet. It’s just sad that the quality is almost always quite bad. Hopefully we’ll soon be able to tour elsewhere in the world so that it will be easier for the foreigners to come there to see us live.

EB: What has been the most difficult hurdle for the band in trying to get your music out to everyone?

Vivian: It required lots of work to make it to the playlist of Finnish YLEX radio channel but fortunately, after quite a struggle, we made it.

EB: Has illegal downloading of your cds been a widespread problem for you?

Vivian: Of course. The amount of free downloads exceeds the number which our records have sold. It pisses me off that I firstly work like a slave writing those songs and live for years in a poverty, because I don’t want to have a normal job; I only want to invest in the band. And when we finally have the songs, release an album and everything is working out just fine, then somebody comes and steals our baby without paying anything.

For me money isn’t the most important thing but still, it would be nice to get some money for this work because without money it’s quite difficult to pay for one’s rent or food. Of course, the internet has its advantages. For instance, our music has spread around the world and we have fans even in those countries where our album hasn’t even been released yet. Still, I hope that those people understand that if nobody buys our records in Mexico, for example, that means that we can’t afford to go there to play a gig.

EB: How do you feel about being invited to participate in Eurovision? Not being from Europe I have no clue about it. What's the big freakin' deal?

Vivian: That’s fun. It would be nice to make it to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest to play our music to 40-50 million TV spectators. The big freakin’ deal is that the event is so gigantic that it is really a huge opportunity to sell our music to an enormous amount of people.

EB: Here's a bit of torture for you. On the same day you are to fly out to be in Eurovision, you get an invitation from the suicide girls to join them at the playboy mansion for a party... now what are you going to do?

Vivian: Heh, this is a difficult one. Probably I would just go and win the Eurovision Song Contest and after that I would receive invitations to the Playboy Mansion everyday.

EB: How have your gigs been going? Are you tired yet? Ready to go home for the holidays and get fat?

Vivian: The gigs were splendid all the way through. Of course, I got a bit tired during the tour. Fortunately, we now have a short holiday and I can go home and gain some weight eating delicious food. Next year we’ll hit the road again with even more energy than the audiences have seen this far. In fact, I would like to start touring already now because I can’t really live without it. We got so used to being on the road that I feel quite empty and weird now that the last gigs before the holidays are over. I’m like “what am I gonna do now”.

EB: What are your plans for the new year? Anything you want to share? Do you make resolutions or do you just hope you do no evil?

Vivian: I’ll be partying with my friends. No exact plans yet. I don’t make any resolutions because I don’t think that they would hold.

EB: And lastly, anything you want to say to your North American fans?

Vivian: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I hope to see you soon. Remember that good things are worth the wait. =)

Karoliina: So, what's new with Lovex?
Theon: We've just started recording our second album.
Karoliina: How's it going?
Theon: We've recorded five songs that haven't been mixed yet, so..
Karoliina: OK..
Theon: But.. We're doing fine.

Kati: OK. You've just passed the first gig of your second tour in Germany. How do you see it compared to the first one?
Theon: Eh.. Well..
Karoliina: Is it different?
Theon: We can be more relaxed, I think, because gigs in Germany we've had and we don't have to be nervous about them that it's
outside Finland and things like that..
Karoliina: I'm looking forward to the change..
Theon: I dont' think it was a major thing after all. But.. We have
more fans of course.
Karoliina: Cool. (To Kati) So?

Kati: OK, thank you. Has anyone of you been to the Czech republic before?
(Everybody says no)
Karoliina: Do you know anything about it? Or can you imagine something when you say the Czech rep.?
Theon: Well, I like Becherovka.
Kati + Karoliina (laugh): Yeeeeah!
Vivian: I like _______
Theon: I heard the beer is cheap..
Karoliina: Yeah, very cheap..
Theon: And the people are cool. And a lot of hockey players.
Karoliina: Yeah, that's right.
Kati: Juke, don't you remember anything from Czech?
Juke: Me?
Kati: Yeah! You!
Juke: Oh.. No..
Kati: Oh, well, OK.
Theon: And what?
Karoliina: Should he?
Kati: Yeah.. A little present.. Slivovice..
Juke: Oh..
Kati: Slivovice in Paderborn..
Juke: Oh.. (laughs) I can't remember. Sorry.
Kati: Never mind.

Karoliina: How many songs have you prepared, I mean, from how many
are you choosing for the album? And how many are going to be placed
on the album? Do you know that already?
Theon: Ah.. That's a bit of a mystery.
Vivian: Yeah..
Theon: We'll go back to the studio in January. And.. We're making
new songs all the time. I can't say how many songs there will be..
Karoliina: Can't you guess, will it be from twenty or from a
hundred?
Theon: Well, something like ten to thirteen.
Karoliina: OK.. Fine..

Karoliina: Have you decided about the title of the album yet?
Vivian: Ah, no.
Karoliina: Do you have any options?
Theon: Not very good options.. (Vivian giggles)
Karoliina: Can you tell us something?
Theon: Something..?
Karoliina: Some of them..
Theon: There's not even that many song names yet, I've written the
lyrics, but haven't decided about the titles yet. Songs like Take
A Shot.. I'm not sure. (the guys laugh) We'll have to figure it out.

Kati: In one interview you talked about a song called Love Is Love
(the guys laugh) and you said it is terrible. Will we hear it on
the album?
Theon: Actually yes.
Karoliina: Cool!
Theon: ..but we have totally new lyrics and the..
Juke: ..all..
Theon: ..small parts and stuff like that. So it isn't that corny.
As it used to be..
Karoliina: Oh.. Will we hear it tonight?
Theon: Probably not.

Karoliina: And would you consider releasing the live version of the song Yours? Like as a bonus on a single or..
Vivian: I don't know.. (looks at the lady from Gun records, who came with us) That's up to our record company.. (the guys laugh)
Theon: Maybe.
Karoliina: I would love to. Are you considering any other covers
than Runaway or Larger Than Life?
Theon: Well, we've just dicussed about some older hits, but let's
keep it a mystery until we've decided.
Karoliina: OK.

Kati: What are you listening to now? I hear some music..
Theon: Now.. Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Karoliina: You, Juke?
Juke: Hmm.. Well, now that's my laptop actually.. But I've been
listening to.. Well, Beatles.
Kati: Wow..
Karoliina: Interesting.
Juke: What else..
Theon: Radiohead..
Juke: Yeah, new Radiohead..
Karoliina: And you, Viivi?
Vivian: Ah.. Right now.. The Nightwish album.
Karoliina: You like it?
Vivian: Yeah.. It's the best album so far from them.
Karoliina: So do you like more Anette than Tarja?
Vivian: Uhmmmmmmmmm........ Eh.. Uhm, no. Both are great.

Karoliina: Could you tell us something about the very
beginnings of Lovex? I mean the founding members etc.. I suppose
we won't avoid talking about Uniklubi here..
Vivian: Well, Jussi was our first singer. (grins) That's about it.
Karoliina: And could you explain us the problem between Lovex and
Uniklubi?
Vivian: Problem..?
Karoliina: We've heard about some bad relationships between these
two bands..
Vivian: No..
Karoliina: No?
Vivian: There's no.. It's like.. Few of those guys are best friends
of mine so it's no.. I think..
Karoliina: It's just rumours..
(Vivian doesn't understand)
Juke: Yeah, I think.
Vivian: No problem..
Karoliina: OK.
Vivian: I don't know about anything.

Karoliina: So, Theo, how did you get in the band?
Theon: Well, the old drummer of Lovex was a friend of mine and he
asked me to join the band.
Karoliina: Instead of Jussi..?
Theon: Yeah..
Vivian: Jussi had already left the band earlier..
Karoliina: OK.

Kati: Would you consider telling your real names to the public?
Whose idea was it to get stage names?
Theon: Well, I've already told my real name in many places..
Karoliina: And the rest?
Vivian: I haven't.
Juke: I think it's no problem for me actually but, well, I don't
think it's necessary to tell my real name..
Karoliina: Yeah. Everyone knows you as Julian Drain and that's it.
Right?
Juke: Yeah.

Kati: OK. Juke, I heard you tried the exams for the University
in Tampere. Did you succeed?
Juke: Well, no, actually. (everyone laughs) We just finished our
first Germany tour and we were in Germany for two and a half
weeks and we were in Tampere at 10 am and the test was at 12 am
and I hadn't even paid for it, so.. That's how it went. (everyone
laughs)
Karoliina: What would you like to study?
(Juke thinks and looks like he doesn't know)
Karoliina: Well you must have applied for something..?
(Juke and Theon are mumbling something and we don't understand)
Karoliina: What?
Juke: Oh, nothing. Well, there's a couple of things I'd like to do,
but all music in some way, to be a part of it.. I think.

Karoliina: Is there any question you would love to hear but no-one
has ever asked you?
(everyone is thinking)
Theon: Nothing special. We get so crazy questions that almost
everything we've heard.
Karoliina: So can you tell us something very crazy? That you were
shocked..
(Theon shows how he's shocked)
Karoliina: Yeah, something like that.
Theon: Oh.. Well.. Uhmm.. What's crazy enough..
(Kati is laughing)
Karoliina: What are you laughting to?
Theon: Yesterday we were in a club in Hamburg and the only thing we
did was we went to McDonalds and ate hamburgers and that's all..
(everyone laughs) That's rock'n'roll.
Karoliina: Rock'n'roll lifestyle.

Karoliina (to Kati): OK, do you wanna ask something else?
Kati: No..
Karoliina: Well, we had prepared about fifty questions, but when
we heard that we had only fifteen minutes for you, we had to..
Shorten it.
Theon: Yeah.

Karoliina: Last question, Viivi, could you do something for me?
Vivian: Uhmm.. What?
Karoliina: Could you play without the T-shirt tonight?
Vivian: Uhmmmmmmmmmmmm..... No, I can't.
Karoliina: Why not?
Vivian: (few seconds of silence..) I'm too fat..
Karoliina: Oh my God.. You're like a woman!
Vivian: Well, my name is Vivian.. (Theon laughs)
Kati: And Juke, could you do something for me?
Juke (scared): Well..
Vivian: You'll play without T-shirt..
Kati: No.. (but no-one hears her..)
Juke: Not today!
Theon: Let's all play without T-shirts!
Kati: No. Could you give me your drumstick?
Juke: Eh.. Yeah, I think.. That was the easier one.. (everyone laughs)

Karoliina: So.. That's it from us. Thank you very much for the
interview.
Theon: Thank you.
Vivian: Thank you.
Juke: Yeah.
Theon: Maybe tonight we could play without our underwear..
Karoliina: Well.. If you prove it..
(a few seconds of silence)
Juke: Uhmm.. Nah. (everyone laughs)

Karoliina: Can we take pictures with you?
Juke: Why not?
Theon: Well, we haven't really made anything with our faces yet..
Karoliina: You look like always..
Juke: That's a shame!
Vivian: You look like always!
Theon: Well then.. It's OK with me..
Juke: Yeah.
Vivian: I don't mind.
